Not sure I have any words of wisdom to add to those you’ve already written so well, Matt. All I can do from my position of “seniority (gettin’ older by the minute!)” is observe that some of us “experts” projected the demise of that upstart “MacPaper” back in the 80s…and I continue to read USA Today religiously here at the end of 2012. Genius that I truly am, I predicted that that “Apple Macintosh” think wouldn’t/couldn’t hold its own against the good ol’ PCs. MySpace has dropped down in the charts, but it’s still hanging in there. So who knows? WIll Facebook lose its position of authority? Will Google+ take the helm? All we can do is wait ’til 2016 and see how prescient you are! Happy New Year!

Thanks for the comment, Edward. I’ve actually heard many great things about the redesign of Gmail, G+, Reader, etc. Maybe I’m just not in the same circles (no pun intended) as you are.

As for the design of this blog, I selected whatever design this is from WordPress and clicked publish. I’m definitely a wordsmith, not a designer.

You make some good points, but I feel that Google has been making a lot of bad design moves lately as well. Have you ever heard anyone say anything good about the redesign of Reader, or Gmail? I mean, what the heck is up with all that low-contrast grey text? Not everyone has perfect vision!

Actually, I’d like to ask you that question, as well. Why did you choose color #555555 for your text instead of plain black? More and more websites are forcing me to open Firebug just to be able to read them.

Hey Dan! Thanks for commenting. I think the first thing he’d do, and what I’d do as well, is figure out the monetization factor. How do you turn those billion users into dollar signs? With the pressure of investors off your back, you’re free to experiment, and more importantly FAIL at that. You needn’t worry about some guy on Wall Street pissed off that he hasn’t been able to turn a buck yet and you can grow your company organically. I don’t know of many organizations that thrive with outsiders that have no idea how to actually execute the business of what they do forcing issues that shouldn’t, or can’t, be forced.

Hey Matt! Sorry to be late for the show. Thanks for the link, even if it’s to probably my greatest miss. But I do think long-term they will figure it out. Social has taken it on the chin on the market as a whole (LinkedIn notwithstanding). I think we are seeing a real challenge to the whole “give me something emotive and I’ll monetize it without issue” doctrine, but there are solutions for most of these companies on the horizon.

I’m curious though: What do you think Zuckerberg would do with the formerly public Facebook if he took it private? Or better yet, what would be your first move?
