Stewart/Colbert Rally: Inside the District (guest post by @mikeschaffer)

November 1, 2010 Leave a comment

My thanks to Mike for taking time out of his weekend to write-up a recap of the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear. I watched the event on TV, but wanted to know what it was like on the ground in DC.

It was a Clusterf*** of Fear and/or Sanity.

Hundreds of thousands of people travelled from around the nation (and maybe beyond) to descend upon the National Mall this weekend to witness the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear.

Here are my reactions:

Reaction #1 – Transportation

As a native Washingtonian, I know rallies, protests and celebrations.  I’ve been to inaugurations, marches, parades, races and festivals along all corners of the nation’s capital, covering the full spectrum of topics.  However, none of these events have EVER clogged the public transportation system like this.  The out-of-towners were smart and came into DC VERY early Saturday morning.  My first report from a friend on the Mall came nearly 4 hours before the event started.

Us locals, however, took our sweet time getting down there, which was our downfall.  By the time my friends and I headed down, the Metro was basically of no use and buses weren’t even stopping to pick up people, since there was no room.  So we walked.  And walked.  And then walked some more.  But the vibe was joyous and light…it was an adventure!

Reaction #2 – The Mall

The streets headed to the Mall made us feel like sardines in a can.  Thousands of people crammed into mini-mobs, collectively looking to get closer to the rally.  Again, though, everyone was so darn happy, we didn’t mind being squished, at least for a while.

It was plain to see that the crowd shattered what the organizers had prepared for.  People climbed on top of trees, streetlights and, disgustingly, port-a-pots.  The video and sound systems were no match for the crowd (with some estimates putting it near 300,000).

Now THAT"S dedication

Reaction #3 – The People

I’ve seen reports that say the rally attendees were young and white.

In a word: hogwash.

I saw every age, from infant to elderly, and every race and religion on the planet very well represented.  As mentioned above, some estimates, placed the attendance at 300,000.  I didn’t count each person, but my thinking was well over 100,000.  It was a stunning turnout for the event (see #5).

People came in costumes of all types.  My favorite was someone dressed as “The Bill” from School House Rock.

People came carrying signs.  These ranged from poignant to absurd.  One sign proclaimed the holder’s fear of his recent double-cancer diagnosis amid the healthcare crisis.  Another said a kitten dies every time a certain former Alaskan governor Tweets.  The sign of the day (non-political), to me, was one that asked “What Would Jesus Do?” with a photo of Jesus, the purple-jumpsuit-wearing bowler in “The Big Lebowski.”  For obvious reasons, my favorite politically-oriented sign will NOT be included here.

Reaction #4 – The Rally

Well, we could barely see or hear anything, so after about an hour of trying to get a better view and enjoying The Roots, we walked back up 7th Street to a tapas bar, ordered some sangria pitchers and watched the rest of the event on TV.

I recorded the event on Comedy Central and will watch it soon, but, that gets me to…

[Note: Upon watching the rally start to finish, it was a mix of funny, corny, entertaining, strange content.  The highlight was clearly Yusuf and Ozzy Osbourne, with Jon Stewart’s event-closing monologue coming in a close second and Kid Rock at #3.]

Reaction #5 – Overall

This is a strange event to evaluate.  Was it a PR stunt or a political movement?  A liberal gathering or a variety show?

Maybe it was something in the middle.  A marketing event that electrified and captivated.  A leftist shout-out with moderate content.  A plea to vote, no matter who you cast your ballot for.   A Halloween weekend jamboree for an excuse to put on a costume a day early.  A sermon preached to the choir.  An inside joke the audience was totally in on.  A fun day with friends.  A touchstone pop-culture event, blending truth and comedy, celebrities and politics.  A platform to recognize good people without shouting and bickering and name-calling.

Maybe each person turned it into what they wanted it to be.

And that sounds just fine to me.

Why the #Hawkeyes Are Superior to the #Cyclones

September 13, 2010 Leave a comment

The following post is by my friend Micah Chaplin. We went to college together at the prestigious Buena Vista University, she is the managing editor of the Perry (Ia.) Chief, a HUGE Texas Rangers fan (her excellent blog, Baseball Is My Boyfriend is TOTALLY worth your time. Especially if you’re a big Rangers fan, or just a baseball fan in general).

In fact, the only flaw I can find in Micah is that she is an Iowa State Cyclones fan. Neither of us felt that an exchange of widgets (because betting money on college sports would be wrong) would do the trick here. So we agreed that the loser of this year’s Iowa/Iowa State game would have to write a post extolling the virtues of the winning team to be posted on the winner’s blog.

If you happened to catch the game, you’ll know the final score was 35-7, Hawkeyes. The lone touchdown scored by Iowa State…well, Micah touches on that in the post that follows, so I’ll just let her get to it. All pictures (courtesy of the Des  Moines Register or Cedar Rapids Gazette) were added by me, for the record, and she wrote this on Saturday night, thus the tense she uses. Also, I’m not sure I would have been as nice as she was had the Hawkeyes been on the other end of the stick.

In the days leading up to the 2010 CyHawk football showdown, Ken Miller of Matt and Miller on KXNO predicted a 34-31 Iowa State victory.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

Even as a lifelong Cyclone, I knew that was a dream. And not even a normal dream – more like a dream inspired by some heavy substance abuse. There was no way the Cyclones were putting up 34 points against the ninth-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes. They have probably one of the top five defenses in the nation. It’s a defense so good, they don’t even have to blitz.  They probably don’t even need to know how to blitz. They’re able to push teams to a three-and-out without blitzing for the QB. That’s pretty solid, and it should be enough to run the table in the Big 10.

For the second consecutive year, the Hawkeyes dominated the Cyclones on offense, putting up 35 points, which went unanswered until there were less than two minutes left in the game. It was the first time Iowa State had scored a touchdown against Iowa since 2006. That was the only thing Cyclones had to cheer about all day as the Hawkeyes delivered a CyHawk-sized pounding.

Jewel Hampton, Adam Robinson, Marvin McNutt, Karl Klug and Adrian Clayborn will live on in the nightmares of Iowa State fans (and Austen Arnaud).  They were huge parts of today’s game, and will likely be the cornerstones to what is ramping up to be a historic season for the Iowa Hawkeyes.

They are going to give plenty of teams nightmares this season. There are no weaknesses in their game.

They can run the ball (275 yards rushing today).

They can throw the ball (204 passing yards today).

They can stop the run (Iowa State had 78 yards rushing).

They can stop the pass (Arnaud was 20-44, good for 197 yards…and three interceptions).

Without a doubt, the Hawkeyes are a dangerous team. To make them even more intimidating, they don’t appear to be the least bit overwhelmed by the ranking that will have a target on their back for the stretch of this season.

Iowa State looked like a pre-junior high, pee wee league team against their brother school from the east area of the state. They failed to execute for most of the game, but even if they had, I’m not sure they could have pulled off a win.  And they most certainly could not have put up the victory Mr. Miller predicted on his show. Iowa was the better team going into the game, and the scoreboard reflected their dominance when the clock ran out.

As much as it pains me to say it, Hawkeye nation (which includes several people I love dearly) is in for an enjoyable ride this fall. Live it up, friends.

#Cookchat Transcript

April 13, 2010 Leave a comment

First of all, THANK YOU! What a great turnout for the world premiere of #cookchat on Sunday night. We had 43 contributors with nearly 500 tweets. Sam and I talked afterwards and agreed that this far exceeded any expectations we had. As I’ve said in the past, the future of #cookchat completely depends on YOU! We want to talk about topics you want to discuss, so email questions/comments/hate mail to cookchat [at] gmail [dot] com or DM either Sam (@SJOGborn) or myself (@MattLaCasse) and we’ll make sure your questions are asked!

Here’s the transcript of the world premiere of #cookchat, and be sure to join us at 8 PM CENTRAL this Sunday for the sophomore edition! Please ignore the time stamp on the left-hand side, I’m sure there’s a way to develop a transcript without it showing up in Pacific time, but I didn’t have the time to figure it out (also, I’m not sure which “Pacific” time whashtag.com is referencing…Hawaii time perhaps?).

MattLaCasse: Welcome to the world premiere of #cookchat! Follow me and @SJOgborn to “hear” the Q’s. Let’s all introduce ourselves!

1:06 am SJOgborn: @calperowitz welcome! thanks for stopping in! #cookchat

1:07 am LaurenJohnson: @Pizzazzerie I’m the same with garlic #cookchat
1:07 am MattLaCasse: @Pizzazzerie I’m like that with garlic. If I think it can mix in, I’m all about it. Same with cilantro during the summer #cookchat
1:08 am JessicaThinkies: I think it matters when like..something has to rise or undergo some kind of chemical reaction lol #cookchat
1:08 am ryanknapp: Hi guys, Ryan Knapp, when we buy a house, my wife will ask about the man room, and I’ll check out the kitchen. #cookchat
1:08 am calperowitz: Q1 yeah, hate to admit it. Follow them to a T. Works out better vs. improvisation. Wife tends 2 agree when I do also. #cookchat

1:08 am SJOgborn: I’m a big fan of making substitutions. I have a slight obsession with olive oil and lemon so I find myself using them like crazy. #cookchat

1:09 am SJOgborn: @Pizzazzerie AH I love goat cheese! yum! #cookchat
1:09 am calperowitz: @SJOgborn the 5 ingredient trend is hot. It’s transcended into packaged foods, too. #cookchat
1:09 am stephmajercik: Q1 I find that oregano and basil go with pretty much anything. Simple, but delicious #cookchat
1:10 am SJOgborn: @calperowitz that’s good though. sometimes it nice to follow them the 1st time around and then make your own subst. later #cookchat
1:10 am MattLaCasse: Q1 Which recipes do you think are easiest to improvise? #cookchat
1:10 am Pizzazzerie: @cookchat @mattlaCasse pizza for sure, you could add darn near anything. #cookchat
1:11 am SJOgborn: @calperowitz and yes, it’s a huge trend! but really great, and good for you too in terms of packaged food #cookchat
1:11 am JessicaThinkies: @stephmajercik agreed, I’m growing 2×2 plots of both in my garden this year! #cookchat
1:11 am MattLaCasse: @calperowitz Completely understand. I like to improvise, but def stick to recipe if I don’t feel comfortable #cookchat
1:11 am heathersolos: @MattLaCasse Q2 grilling and sauteing are where I tend to give myself the most leeway #cookchat
1:11 am ryanknapp: Q1: I follow the gist of a recipe, but I normally add my own flair, but more often than not I add what I have available. #cookchat
1:11 am MattLaCasse: @HeatherSolos That’s not a bad idea at all. Figure out your “base” and then go from there. #cookchat
1:11 am stephmajercik: @MattLaCasse Any pasta dish is pretty hard to screw up IMO, unless its a cream sauce #cookchat
1:12 am ryanknapp: Q1: Most of my recipes from Spain play into this fact, it’s pretty much the same, then ‘add what you have’ #cookchat
1:12 am JessicaThinkies: @MattLaCasse pastas and stir fries are the easiest to toss together without a plan or recipe #cookchat
1:12 am SJOgborn: @ryanknapp definitely. I have a habit of dumping whatever I have in my fridge/cabinet/etc. #cookchat
1:12 am razethecity: Q2 I find italian really easy to improvise because there are so many flavours that you can run with. #cookchat
1:12 am stephmajercik: @JessicaThinkies I have yet to try the fresh stuff, but would love a little herb garden! Thats a great idea #cookchat
1:12 am MattLaCasse: RT @ryanknapp: Q1: Most of my recipes from Spain play into this fact it’s pretty much the same, then ‘add what you have’ #cookchat
1:12 am LaurenJohnson: I’m a big fan of the empty-the-fridge cooking, so I think it’s easy to improvise on a lot of recipes #cookchat
1:12 am calperowitz: @ryanknapp nice. Have to agree. Thinking of remodeling mine, and already know that’s where my focus is too. #cookchat
1:13 am SJOgborn: Q2 What’s your favorite food to eat when you go out? #cookchat
1:13 am DeAnnBaxter: RT @calperowitz: Attn: foodie followers. World premiere of #cookchat is about to start.
1:13 am CornOnTheJob: Boo, I need to go coach a hockey game. Enjoy the rest of #cookchat everyone! #cookchat
1:13 am MattLaCasse: @razethecity True story. You can go so many different ways with Italian. #cookchat
1:13 am razethecity: RT @calperowitz: @ryanknapp nice. Have to agree. Thinking of remodeling mine, and already know that’s where my focus is too. #cookchat
1:13 am JessicaThinkies: @stephmajercik it’s too easy, and you can dry enough to last you all year, quite the money saver #cookchat
1:13 am stephmajercik: @ryanknapp @SJOgborn I’m the same way too. I like to just see what I’ve got and just throw something together. #cookchat
1:14 am MattLaCasse: RT @SJOgborn: Q2 What’s your favorite food to eat when you go out? #cookchat
1:14 am eangel427: RT @calperowitz: Attn: foodie followers. World premiere of #cookchat is about to start.
1:14 am calperowitz: Q2 chef recommends is what I tend to order. Want to be wowed, no matter the venue. #cookchat
1:14 am razethecity: Q2 I love to get Indian because no matter how often I try at home, I’m always missing something that makes it taste authentic. #cookchat
1:14 am Pizzazzerie: @cookchat hmm.. chicken fingers? haha, actually, good grilled salmon! #cookchat
1:14 am ryanknapp: @calperowitz Yeah, it’s the truth though in my house. My wife has cooked 4 meals for me since we started together. #cookchat

1:16 am MattLaCasse: @ryanknapp Great potato chowder is like a holy grail search for me. In same category as broccoli and cheese soup. #cookchat

Nestle Makes Calling Customer Service Fun(ny)

February 17, 2010 1 comment

I was scrolling through my Twitter feed this morning and saw an interesting post from Jefferson City Mayor John Landwehr:

Needless to say, I was intrigued. I followed the instructions, and what happened put a smile on my face. Pushing the number 4 after the 10 second pause takes you to the “Funner” menu where you get a variety of different options ranging from information about cooties to listening to a backyard game of catch or listen to a boy express affection for the girl he likes.

So what does it all mean, Basil? Simple. By doing something like this, it makes you LIKE Nestle, and be more likely to do business with them again, or perhaps be willing to discuss whatever issue it is you  have with the company in a reasonable manner rather than just yelling at the first live person you get on the phone. I believe it’s genius public relations. It’s also a huge risk, because it is out of the ordinary.

This wouldn’t work for every company. For example, could you imagine hearing that on Toyota’s customer service line currently? The right company, in the right situation, can do this and build positive name recognition as well as customer loyalty. If I’m faced with a decision to choose between something with a Nestle brand name or a Hershey’s brand name, I am choosing the Nestle product. Not necessarily because it’s a better product, but because I just like the company more.

What do you think? Could this work for other companies? If Nestle was hit with a recall, would they need to take that off their phone system?
