Call Me Maybe. Except When I Ask You To.

August 17, 2012 Leave a comment

This post first appeared on PR Breakfast Club on June 5th, 2012.

You are a PR firm in Hoboken, New Jersey. You have a snazzy idea to cover “Call Me Maybe” as a recruitment ad for the boon of new college grads in the workforce. At the end of the video, you then insist that they visit your website rather than call your office. And then you disable the comments on the video on YouTube. Methinks you did not think this one through.

We can’t embed the video here due to playback restrictions on YouTube, but you can check it out here.

My PR Bucket List

December 1, 2011 4 comments

Inspired by Arik Hanson, Justin Goldsborough and Heather Whaling, I’ve decided to put together my own PR bucket list. Traditionally, I don’t have goals for my career as defined by most. There’s not a particular job title I want to hold. I don’t have an idea in mind for a salary number that would make me feel as if I’ve “arrived”. There’s not a particular client I want to land. That said, after some thought, I think these are some things I’d love to shoot for. Two of these probably aren’t feasible in any way (#3, #5) because I’d have to be employed by the University of Iowa and it’s doubtful I could ever convince my wife to move to Iowa City; and Rage Against The Machine is likely kaput forever (WHY CAN’T YOU JUST GET ALONG WITH THE BAND, ZACH??!!!!). Without further ado, my Top 5 for my PR bucket list:

  1. Secure the opportunity for a client (or myself) to sing the 7th inning stretch at Wrigley Field
  2. Advise a Major League Baseball franchise (stole this one from Hanson; but it’s been something I’ve wanted to do for a while)
  3. Conduct media relations for the University of Iowa Hawkeyes during a Rose Bowl trip
  4. Do press for a non-profit I either work for or that is a client that has secured a 7-figure donation/fundraising event
  5. Manage the press for Rage Against the Machine’s reunion World Tour

How about you? What’s on your PR bucket list?

Admit it. You are excited for a holiday break.

Generally speaking, this week and next are, by and large, the  most unproductive weeks of the year. I know this because when I was a reporter, it was nearly impossible to get anyone on the phone. I’d even go down to offices, convinced they were dodging me, to find the office locked up, lights off.

Everyone needs a break. We all need to shut the computer off, put the ringer on mute, and spend some quality time with our friends and family. The world is not going to end if you don’t accomplish as much as you typically do over the next two weeks, I promise. I mean, the world COULD end, but it won’t be because you’re unproductive. Unless you’re this guy I suppose.

My main point is that many of us feel guilty when we take time off. Think about how often you see someone tweeting, hoping they can be productive while on vacation, or on a quick day trip somewhere fun. The best part about being human is when we’re taking our time off. I guard my downtime jealously. I think that comes from growing up on a farm in Iowa. Growing up, I worked my tail off, especially during the summer, from the time I got out of bed until it was time for supper. But when we were done, we were done. Work stays out in the field, or out in the barn, or wherever it is taking place.

I’d offer that same mindset and advice to you (which you OBVIOUSLY want since you are reading this). 98% of the year, work your tail off. But that 2%, be it weekends, holidays or vacations, is YOURS. Not your clients, not your boss’s, not your employee’s. It is yours. Spend it doing what you want to do.

Have a Merry Christmas everyone.

Stewart/Colbert Rally: Inside the District (guest post by @mikeschaffer)

November 1, 2010 Leave a comment

My thanks to Mike for taking time out of his weekend to write-up a recap of the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear. I watched the event on TV, but wanted to know what it was like on the ground in DC.

It was a Clusterf*** of Fear and/or Sanity.

Hundreds of thousands of people travelled from around the nation (and maybe beyond) to descend upon the National Mall this weekend to witness the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear.

Here are my reactions:

Reaction #1 – Transportation

As a native Washingtonian, I know rallies, protests and celebrations.  I’ve been to inaugurations, marches, parades, races and festivals along all corners of the nation’s capital, covering the full spectrum of topics.  However, none of these events have EVER clogged the public transportation system like this.  The out-of-towners were smart and came into DC VERY early Saturday morning.  My first report from a friend on the Mall came nearly 4 hours before the event started.

Us locals, however, took our sweet time getting down there, which was our downfall.  By the time my friends and I headed down, the Metro was basically of no use and buses weren’t even stopping to pick up people, since there was no room.  So we walked.  And walked.  And then walked some more.  But the vibe was joyous and light…it was an adventure!

Reaction #2 – The Mall

The streets headed to the Mall made us feel like sardines in a can.  Thousands of people crammed into mini-mobs, collectively looking to get closer to the rally.  Again, though, everyone was so darn happy, we didn’t mind being squished, at least for a while.

It was plain to see that the crowd shattered what the organizers had prepared for.  People climbed on top of trees, streetlights and, disgustingly, port-a-pots.  The video and sound systems were no match for the crowd (with some estimates putting it near 300,000).

Now THAT"S dedication

Reaction #3 – The People

I’ve seen reports that say the rally attendees were young and white.

In a word: hogwash.

I saw every age, from infant to elderly, and every race and religion on the planet very well represented.  As mentioned above, some estimates, placed the attendance at 300,000.  I didn’t count each person, but my thinking was well over 100,000.  It was a stunning turnout for the event (see #5).

People came in costumes of all types.  My favorite was someone dressed as “The Bill” from School House Rock.

People came carrying signs.  These ranged from poignant to absurd.  One sign proclaimed the holder’s fear of his recent double-cancer diagnosis amid the healthcare crisis.  Another said a kitten dies every time a certain former Alaskan governor Tweets.  The sign of the day (non-political), to me, was one that asked “What Would Jesus Do?” with a photo of Jesus, the purple-jumpsuit-wearing bowler in “The Big Lebowski.”  For obvious reasons, my favorite politically-oriented sign will NOT be included here.

Reaction #4 – The Rally

Well, we could barely see or hear anything, so after about an hour of trying to get a better view and enjoying The Roots, we walked back up 7th Street to a tapas bar, ordered some sangria pitchers and watched the rest of the event on TV.

I recorded the event on Comedy Central and will watch it soon, but, that gets me to…

[Note: Upon watching the rally start to finish, it was a mix of funny, corny, entertaining, strange content.  The highlight was clearly Yusuf and Ozzy Osbourne, with Jon Stewart’s event-closing monologue coming in a close second and Kid Rock at #3.]

Reaction #5 – Overall

This is a strange event to evaluate.  Was it a PR stunt or a political movement?  A liberal gathering or a variety show?

Maybe it was something in the middle.  A marketing event that electrified and captivated.  A leftist shout-out with moderate content.  A plea to vote, no matter who you cast your ballot for.   A Halloween weekend jamboree for an excuse to put on a costume a day early.  A sermon preached to the choir.  An inside joke the audience was totally in on.  A fun day with friends.  A touchstone pop-culture event, blending truth and comedy, celebrities and politics.  A platform to recognize good people without shouting and bickering and name-calling.

Maybe each person turned it into what they wanted it to be.

And that sounds just fine to me.

When Attention-Getting Ideas Turn Obnoxious

September 14, 2010 5 comments

I have a small confession to make before we go any further. I find myself tapping my toes to some of Lady Gaga’s music. I’ll stop short of calling tunes like “Poker Face” or “Telephone” good or bad, and simply say I find them stuck in my head randomly. One of those random times was yesterday morning when this picture graced my Google Reader inbox:

Um. Wow. Let’s just all let that marinate for a minute or two (thanks, I’ll be here all week. Tip your waitress and try the veal. GAH! SOMEONE STOP ME!!! I’M IN A PUN VORTEX!!!!)

We all know Lady Gaga likes to pull the crazy out every once in a while, give it a Roger Clemens’ size dose of steriods and really go for gusto. That said, sometimes, enough is enough. Her outfit didn’t, and doesn’t, offend me. As my friend Aurora Meyer was kind enough to point out, it actually makes me hungry. Looking at her fashion choices from a PR perspective, she’s allowing her persona to outweigh her job performance; that is her singing.

The same thing can happen for us in public relations. When the stunt to grab the media attention ends up taking over the headlines, and the message you are trying to deliver is lost, you’ve actually cooked up your own mini-media-crisis. It’s usually not serious, unless someone gets hurt, but still. Do you want to be known as the PR person and/or firm who puts clients in a meat-dress (metaphorically speaking), or do you want to be the firm that can get that positive public attention in fun ways that DON’T distract from the message?

Feel free to cut loose and go with that zany idea every now and again. Just don’t make the mistake of letting those zany ideas drowning out your message.

Why the #Hawkeyes Are Superior to the #Cyclones

September 13, 2010 Leave a comment

The following post is by my friend Micah Chaplin. We went to college together at the prestigious Buena Vista University, she is the managing editor of the Perry (Ia.) Chief, a HUGE Texas Rangers fan (her excellent blog, Baseball Is My Boyfriend is TOTALLY worth your time. Especially if you’re a big Rangers fan, or just a baseball fan in general).

In fact, the only flaw I can find in Micah is that she is an Iowa State Cyclones fan. Neither of us felt that an exchange of widgets (because betting money on college sports would be wrong) would do the trick here. So we agreed that the loser of this year’s Iowa/Iowa State game would have to write a post extolling the virtues of the winning team to be posted on the winner’s blog.

If you happened to catch the game, you’ll know the final score was 35-7, Hawkeyes. The lone touchdown scored by Iowa State…well, Micah touches on that in the post that follows, so I’ll just let her get to it. All pictures (courtesy of the Des  Moines Register or Cedar Rapids Gazette) were added by me, for the record, and she wrote this on Saturday night, thus the tense she uses. Also, I’m not sure I would have been as nice as she was had the Hawkeyes been on the other end of the stick.

In the days leading up to the 2010 CyHawk football showdown, Ken Miller of Matt and Miller on KXNO predicted a 34-31 Iowa State victory.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

Even as a lifelong Cyclone, I knew that was a dream. And not even a normal dream – more like a dream inspired by some heavy substance abuse. There was no way the Cyclones were putting up 34 points against the ninth-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes. They have probably one of the top five defenses in the nation. It’s a defense so good, they don’t even have to blitz.  They probably don’t even need to know how to blitz. They’re able to push teams to a three-and-out without blitzing for the QB. That’s pretty solid, and it should be enough to run the table in the Big 10.

For the second consecutive year, the Hawkeyes dominated the Cyclones on offense, putting up 35 points, which went unanswered until there were less than two minutes left in the game. It was the first time Iowa State had scored a touchdown against Iowa since 2006. That was the only thing Cyclones had to cheer about all day as the Hawkeyes delivered a CyHawk-sized pounding.

Jewel Hampton, Adam Robinson, Marvin McNutt, Karl Klug and Adrian Clayborn will live on in the nightmares of Iowa State fans (and Austen Arnaud).  They were huge parts of today’s game, and will likely be the cornerstones to what is ramping up to be a historic season for the Iowa Hawkeyes.

They are going to give plenty of teams nightmares this season. There are no weaknesses in their game.

They can run the ball (275 yards rushing today).

They can throw the ball (204 passing yards today).

They can stop the run (Iowa State had 78 yards rushing).

They can stop the pass (Arnaud was 20-44, good for 197 yards…and three interceptions).

Without a doubt, the Hawkeyes are a dangerous team. To make them even more intimidating, they don’t appear to be the least bit overwhelmed by the ranking that will have a target on their back for the stretch of this season.

Iowa State looked like a pre-junior high, pee wee league team against their brother school from the east area of the state. They failed to execute for most of the game, but even if they had, I’m not sure they could have pulled off a win.  And they most certainly could not have put up the victory Mr. Miller predicted on his show. Iowa was the better team going into the game, and the scoreboard reflected their dominance when the clock ran out.

As much as it pains me to say it, Hawkeye nation (which includes several people I love dearly) is in for an enjoyable ride this fall. Live it up, friends.

1:34 am MattLaCasse: Q4 We tend to cook more than go out. However, I’m bound and determined to recreate loaded mashed potatoes from Colton’s. #cookchat #cookchat
1:34 am NdorphinAddict: @SJOgborn We eat out less because I want fresher, healthier food, and I can’t get that eating out as readily #cookchat
1:35 am MichaelBittner: Speaking of ballpark food.. #cookchat http://twitpic.com/24jmx5
1:35 am aurorameyer: step 4 cooling and de greasing. #cookchat http://twitpic.com/24jn2z

1:36 am MattLaCasse: @brittenwolf @LauraScholz If I never ate at another nat’l chain (i.e. Applebee’s) I’d do an Irish jig. Even though I’m French #cookchat
1:36 am davidlmulder: I’m not surprised that value-added, chain restaurants have been faltering. Quality isn’t there for the price. #cookchat
1:37 am jessicamalnik: @hanniespice I have to downsize the recipes, since all those shows have recipes that feed an army literally #dinnerforone #cookchat

1:38 am jessicamalnik: Yes! RT @LauraScholz @SJOgborn Q4: I think we eat out more. Mostly b/c we’re busy-I like to think we’re helping the local economy! #cookchat
1:38 am MattLaCasse: @LauraScholz I try not to, but the town I live in doesn’t have a ton of local options. Why we cook more than eat out #cookchat
1:39 am MattLaCasse: Q5 coming up in 4 minutes. #cookchat
1:39 am SJOgborn: I went out to this French restaurant in Chicago that totally knocked my socks off. Meal could definitely not be recreated! #cookchat
1:39 am brittenwolf: A play off Q4, but what’s your favorite meal from a local spot? #cookchat
1:40 am jessicamalnik: @LauraScholz I’m not a huge fan of Chick-fil-a although I do enjoy discreetly laughing @ the ppl who go there dressed up like cows #cookchat
1:40 am NdorphinAddict: I have found it helpful to cook extra and freeze it so when I’m busy I have a ready meal. #cookchat
1:40 am NdorphinAddict: Daycare staff are jealous of my son’s lunches lol #cookchat
1:41 am MattLaCasse: @SJOgborn There are definitely reasons to go out to eat, like your French restaurant! #cookchat
1:42 am SJOgborn: @brittenwolf Salad featuring locally grown ingredients…doesn’t seem like it would make a difference, but it definitely does. :) #cookchat
1:42 am MattLaCasse: @LauraScholz Yes. I (sometimes) miss living in a bit more urban area like I did in Columbia, MO. #cookchat
1:42 am NdorphinAddict: @SJOgborn Local makes ALL the difference. #cookchat
1:43 am NdorphinAddict: @MattLaCasse Oh hell yes! When in Denver @lecentraldenver is a MUST for EXCELLENT food #cookchat
1:43 am NdorphinAddict: One of the things I really love now is delivery svc that brings me local, organic produce weekly to my home. #cookchat
1:43 am MattLaCasse: Q5 Mixing drinks is considered cooking, right? What’s your favorite summertime mixed drink? #cookchat
1:44 am SJOgborn: RT @MattLaCasse Q5 Mixing drinks is considered cooking, right? What’s your favorite summertime mixed drink? #cookchat
1:44 am MichaelBittner: @cookchat Rum+coke. Also my favorite fall, winter and spring drink. #cookchat
1:45 am jessicamalnik: @MattLaCasse You think CoMo is urban?! I take that back, I forgot where you now live. :) #cookchat

1:46 am MattLaCasse: @jessicamalnik It ain’t small (anymore), that’s for sure! :) #cookchat #cookchat
1:47 am MattLaCasse: Q5 My summertime drink is gin or vodka and tonic. Recently discovered sweet tea flavored vodka. It’s simply amahzing dahling. #cookchat
1:47 am jessicamalnik: @MattLaCasse Yeah, but it isn’t exactly a huge metro area either. #justsayin #cookchat
1:47 am aurorameyer: @SJOgborn I’ll see what I can do! thanks! couldn’t have done it without Jason! he cook while I took pictures! #cookchat

1:48 am jessicamalnik: @aurorameyer My pleasure! If you start a food blog, I’ll definitely subscribe, read and comment on it all the time. #cookchat
1:48 am MattLaCasse: Q5 Do you find your alcohol tastes vary w/ the seasons? Or do they stay the same? #cookchat
1:49 am jessicamalnik: @MattLaCasse Wow, CoMo is the 2nd smallest city I’ve lived in. #citygirl #cookchat
1:49 am MattLaCasse: @jwendz Sangria is such a dicey drink. If done correctly, it’s fantastic. If done poorly…yikes. #cookchat
1:50 am SJOgborn: @jessicamalnik CoMo is definitely THE smallest city I’ve lived in. I’m going to miss it big time though. Must go back soon. #cookchat
1:50 am SJOgborn: @MattLaCasse Totally agree with the sangria bit. cc @jwendz #cookchat
1:51 am MattLaCasse: @SJOgborn @jessicamalnik You can fit my hometown of Grinnell, IA almost four times into Wrigley. Pop of 10,000. #cookchat
1:52 am lanes0220: Q5:Def varies! Right now I’m in the midst of sweet tea vodka, not so much in the winter #cookchat
1:52 am SJOgborn: Ok, and Q6. Settle the debate: KC, Memphis, or Carolina BBQ? #cookchat
1:53 am MattLaCasse: @SJOgborn will drop Q6 in just a bit. A quick thank you to everyone who is participating this evening! You all add flavor! #cookchat
1:53 am jessicamalnik: @MattLaCasse Wow! That’s tiny. #cookchat
1:53 am SJOgborn: Just received a potentially threatening message from @MattLaCasse but good for him we agree on Kansas City BBQ. You got lucky. #cookchat
1:53 am NdorphinAddict: @MattLaCasse For me they vary by season. I find I drink much more red wine and “heavier” flavors in fall and winter. #cookchat
1:54 am MattLaCasse: Q6 KC BBQ. Perfect mix of smoked meat and sauce. #cookchat
1:54 am SethDrury: @SJOgborn @MattLaCasse An Arnie Palmer, its the perfect summer concoction! #cookchat
1:55 am MattLaCasse: @SethDrury Tried it w/ sweet tea vodka rather than regular tea? It’s wonderful. #cookchat
1:55 am SJOgborn: @SethDrury I think we should be BFF’s? That’s my all-time favorite drink, not just in the summer. #cookchat
1:56 am NdorphinAddict: @brittenwolf Have u tried a Peru libre? Even better than rum & coke (Cuba libre) #cookchat
1:57 am MattLaCasse: @laurenkgray is missing her chance to fight for Carolina BBQ over Memphis or KC. #cookchat
1:58 am MattLaCasse: Q5 I think we can all agree on at least one thing. Do not sully my whisky with anything other than ice or water. #cookchat
1:59 am brittenwolf: @NdorphinAddict No, but I’ll check it out! Thanks for the tip. #cookchat

#Cookchat Goes On A Self-Imposed Diet

But don’t worry, it’s a diet that is meant to fatten us up. My partner in deliciousness Sam Ogborn has a post on the new details about #cookchat going to a monthly schedule rather than weekly on her blog here. Or you can just read it below where I’ve C&P’d it:

Matt and I have decided (after much deliberation) to move our fabulous foodie and chef #cookchat from weekly to monthly. We’ve been talking about this switch for some time now, and while Sundays still work, our schedules currently don’t permit the attention this chat deserves on a weekly basis.

But don’t fret – we have lots of plans in the works to ensure that when this chat goes monthly, it’s better than ever. We’re looking to talk and pitch to food bloggers, critics, and networks to see how we can grow. We want to engage with them and tell them what we’re all about.

Matt and I also have ideas to make #cookchat more interactive. One way we plan on doing this is by working to increase the participant count. We want everyone to walk away with fresh perspectives, new recipes, and ideas after every chat.

Not to mention, Matt and I have always talked about making sure that everyone’s voices are heard. We want to know what you’re looking for, what you’d like to recommend, and what questions you have. The hashtag #cookchat is always meant to be used, even when it’s not during the hour-long monthly chat. Read an interesting article you’d like to share? Have a question for the next chat? Don’t be afraid to tweet it and use our hashtag, or email Matt or I. We prefer to use your questions. After all, we are just moderators looking to guide this foodie conversation, not control it.

Feel free to email Matt and I anytime!

Sam’s email: sam.ogborn@me.com
Matt’s email: lacamat@gmail.com

We look forward to announcing the date of the next #cookchat soon, so make sure to check out the hashtag on Twitter!

1:07 am SJOgborn: @cookchat Q1 I’ll admit..I am a super stickler about where my food comes from. Unfortunately this and my budget don’t match up! #cookchat
1:07 am aurorameyer: @MattLaCasse i’m intrigued about #foodinc. but I think it might be too much for me #cookchat#cookchat
1:07 am emrosario: Should really be involved in #cookchat since I’m obsessed with food. But I have a paper to write =/
1:07 am JGoldsborough: RT @MattLaCasse: RT @SJOgborn: Q1: How much attention do you pay to where your food comes from? http://bit.ly/bDY1Ml #cookchat
1:07 am stephmajercik: @bitty_boop @JGoldsborough Good to see you two here! :) #cookchat
1:08 am bitty_boop: Q1 I don’t pay enough attention like I probably should. #cookchat
1:08 am bitty_boop: @SJOgborn @stephmajercik Glad to be here. #cookchat
1:08 am SJOgborn: @aurorameyer that’s awesome that you can taste a difference. I keep telling myself “someday…” #cookchat
1:08 am MattLaCasse: @emrosario Boooooo! That paper will still be there in an hour! You know what won’t be? #cookchat
1:08 am aurorameyer: @JGoldsborough we had lemon pepper chicken, rice and a salad with parsley. it was delish. not sure what grade though #cookchat #cookchat
1:08 am JGoldsborough: Q1: Don’t pay much attention as long as it’s cooked and tastes good with BBQ sauce. #cookchat
1:08 am stephmajercik: Q1-I honestly don’t pay that much attention to where my food comes from #cookchat
1:08 am shonali: Re: Q1, I would love to pay more attention to where my food comes from/how humanely it’s raised/killed. Budgets don’t always allow #cookchat
1:08 am SJOgborn: @emrosario no worries, hope we can see you next week. Good luck on homework (I’m off to work like crazy after the chat!) #cookchat
1:09 am MattLaCasse: I grew up on a farm in Iowa. I can TOTALLY tell the diff between fresh and not. #cookchat
1:09 am JGoldsborough: @stephmajercik @bitty_boop Good 2cu as well. This chat is fun. #cookchat
1:09 am aurorameyer: @SJOgborn tomatoes are the garden entry drug of choice. once you taste a fresh one you won’t go back. #cookchat #cookchat
1:09 am MattLaCasse: Q1 Do you think cost is the main reason folks don’t care where food comes from? #cookchat
1:09 am JGoldsborough: @aurorameyer Oh, that’s like college or maybe even grad school. Way to healthy for us on a Sunday :) . Sounds good! #cookchat #cookchat
1:09 am SJOgborn: If you do buy some food consciously, what are you always watchful of when you’re at the grocery store? #cookchat
1:09 am bitty_boop: Hahah agreed RT @JGoldsborough: Q1: Don’t pay much attention as long as it’s cooked and tastes good with BBQ sauce. #cookchat
1:09 am shonali: Re: Q1, not so much “where” it comes from, but I do pay attention to the labels wrt “stuff.” Does that count? #cookchat
1:10 am JGoldsborough: @MattLaCasse If they were Ruffles, you’re back to 3rd grade (LOL) #cookchat
1:10 am MattLaCasse: @emrosario I’m quite persuasive when convincing people to procrastinate. Just ask my wife. #cookchat
1:10 am aurorameyer: @shonali i’d say start small. try a few organic veggies. you’ll taste a difference. #cookchat #cookchat
1:10 am SJOgborn: @MattLaCasse Definitely. I know all of my friends would buy healthier if they could afford it. #cookchat
1:10 am stephmajercik: RT @bitty_boop: Hahah agreed RT @JGoldsborough: Q1: Dont pay much attention as long as its cooked and tastes good with BBQ sauce. #cookchat
1:10 am JGoldsborough: @SJOgborn Hate to say it, but price usually wins over all else. I do watch % lean when buying ground beef. #cookchat
1:10 am SJOgborn: @JGoldsborough all I can think of is “r-r-r-ruffles have ridges” #cookchat
1:11 am shonali: @aurorameyer Doesn’t how you cook them make a difference as well? #cookchat
1:11 am aurorameyer: @JGoldsborough it’s super easy! I’m happy to share the recipe. it only takes 25 minutes too! #cookchat #cookchat
1:11 am msjen01: @shonali Pay more $ now for quality produce, eat more fresh foods, and pay less later in medical bills. #cookchat
1:11 am MattLaCasse: I think the biggest thing to do is by as locally as you can. Choose farmers market over Dole. #cookchat
1:11 am MattLaCasse: @JGoldsborough Nope. Cheetos. 2nd grade. #cookchat
1:11 am SJOgborn: @shonali that definitely counts. I am always on the watch for HFCS…sometimes it’s just so uneccessary in food! #cookchat
1:11 am razethecity: a little late! Hi, I’m Meghan and I got a set of pots and pans for Christmas, it was the best ever. #cookchat
1:11 am JGoldsborough: So true. I like cool ranch Dorritos and Fritos best. u? RT @SJOgborn: all I can think of is “r-r-r-ruffles have ridges” #cookchat
1:12 am shonali: @msjen01 Well yes, but there’s a lot more that goes into that! Exercise, etc. #cookchat
1:12 am aurorameyer: @shonali very true! ratatouille is a great place to start with fresh veggies in the summer. fresh flavors. #cookchat #cookchat
1:12 am msjen01: @shonali You can also do it gradually. Our food budget has increased slowly as we add more fresh veggies/fruits #cookchat
1:12 am stephmajercik: Good advice RT @MattLaCasse: I think the biggest thing to do is by as locally as you can. Choose farmers market over Dole. #cookchat
1:12 am MattLaCasse: @emrosario We’re discussing slowfood currently! Q2 is coming up in 1 minute #cookchat
1:12 am razethecity: Q1 No, I think for a few people it’s more about convenience than anything else! #cookchat
1:12 am JGoldsborough: @aurorameyer Ooh, we should start sharing recipes in some way. A #cookchat cookbook. Please do share!
1:12 am aurorameyer: @SJOgborn agreed! I can taste it like aspartame in food now. #HFCS #cookchat #cookchat
1:12 am cockyhawkfan: Q1 Partially, but I would say fast food and a diluted sense of quality are the biggest factors #cookchat
1:13 am msjen01: @shonali Actually from what I’ve read & researched, what we put into our body for fuel is a huge part. Exercise, too of course #cookchat
1:13 am shonali: Speaking as a PR person, I think farmers markets etc. need to project a better image so that they become mainstream. #cookchat
1:13 am razethecity: RT @aurorameyer Ooh, we should start sharing recipes in some way. A #cookchat cookbook. Please do share! << Love this idea!
1:13 am MattLaCasse: Q2 Do you have a preference for organic vs. non-organic food? #cookchat
1:13 am aurorameyer: @JGoldsborough lemon pepper, white wine, olive oil. that’s it. #cookchat #cookchat
1:13 am shonali: @aurorameyer I LOVE ratatouille. #cookchat
1:14 am JGoldsborough: @razethecity For me, price and eating healthy are most important. But healthy to me means vegetables or fruit on every plate. #cookchat
1:14 am cockyhawkfan: You really have to be careful when typing #cookchat. A typo could change the conversation in a hurry! #cookchat
1:14 am stephmajercik: Q2 I don’t buy organic food. Have read its not THAT much healthier and the price is ridiculous #cookchat
1:14 am aurorameyer: @shonali we found the recipe from the movie. AMAZING! #cookchat #cookchat
1:14 am MattLaCasse: @shonali Couldn’t agree more. They need to position themselves as a viable alternative to supermarkets. #cookchat
1:14 am SJOgborn: @JGoldsborough I like Krunchers…SO random…lol #cookchat
1:14 am JGoldsborough: Non. Cheaper. RT @MattLaCasse: Q2 Do you have a preference for organic vs. non-organic food? #cookchat
1:14 am msjen01: @shonali but feeding our body properly allows it to take better care of itself (you!) Eat to Live by Fuhrman is a great read. #cookchat
1:14 am shonali: LOL! RT @cockyhawkfan: You really have to be careful when typing #cookchat. A typo could change the conversation in a hurry! #cookchat
1:15 am JGoldsborough: @shonali Good call on farmer’s markets. We actually have some great ones in KC, but they could use a lot of PR. Hidden gems. #cookchat
1:15 am chanel4news: LOL! RT @cockyhawkfan: You really have to be careful when typing #cookchat. A typo could change the conversation in a hurry! #cookchat
1:15 am razethecity: Q2 I try to be conscious of buying organic, but sometimes it is cost prohibitive. #cookchat
1:15 am emrosario: #cookchat for Q1 cost def matters. Farmer Joel’s is the organic supermarket in ny & not sure if the benefits outweighs cost to me (student)
1:15 am aurorameyer: #cookchat Q2 there’s a list let me see if I can find it. It depends on the price really and where it came #cookchat
1:15 am SJOgborn: @shonali wow, great point. Honestly something is better than nothing. The ones I know of are super lax about advertising/pr/etc. #cookchat
1:15 am josephacampbell: #cockchat RT @cockyhawkfan You really have to be careful when typing #cookchat. A typo could change the conversation in a hurry! #cookchat
1:15 am JGoldsborough: U must go to @Panera a lot. They serve those. Jalapeno Krunchers rock! RT @SJOgborn: I like Krunchers…SO random…lol #cookchat
1:15 am aurorameyer: for example mexican strawberries give me an allergic reaction. #cookchat. #cookchat
1:15 am bitty_boop: Q2 I’m not a big fan of organic food but if it’s there I won’t turn it down. I mean you only live once might as well enjoy it. #cookchat
1:15 am shonali: @msjen01 I completely agree. It’s not always easy to get one’s body to listen, though! #cookchat
1:15 am SJOgborn: RT @MattLaCasse Q2 Do you have a preference for organic vs. non-organic food? #cookchat#cookchat
1:16 am SJOgborn: @razethecity nice to see you here again! :) welcome! #cookchat
1:16 am MattLaCasse: Q2 It seems like the defining issue is cost. Can the public convince Big Food Companies to provide better options? #cookchat
1:16 am lacajag: Q1: Part 1: “Ppl who don’t care where food comes” from doesn’t always = “people who don’t buy organically, ethically.” (part 2…) #cookchat
1:16 am msjen01: @shonali Takes time for sure! #cookchat
1:17 am aurorameyer: #cookchat Q2 farmers markets aren’t much more expensive and neither is gardening yourself. #cookchat
1:17 am razethecity: @SJOgborn Hi! Thanks, it’s good to see you too! The familiar faces are so nice! #cookchat
1:17 am JGoldsborough: @msjen01 True. But exercise plays a role in how we feel too. I feel like I can take more liberty w/ food cause workout. #cookchat
1:17 am lacajag: Q1: Part 2 – When ppl can’t afford organic/ethically produced food doesn’t always mean they don’t care. #cookchat
1:18 am stephmajercik: Q2 I think if the health benefits of organic were bigger, I could justify it. It just isn’t worth it. #cookchat
1:18 am SJOgborn: @JGoldsborough IMO, jalapeno anything is amazing. love anything spicy that kind of hurts (those chips could be much spicier) #cookchat
1:18 am JGoldsborough: @MattLaCasse A good question. Eating healthy shouldn’t be so expensive. But it is, unfortunately. #cookchat
1:18 am JGoldsborough: RT @MattLaCasse: Q2 It seems defining issue is cost. Can the public convince Big Food Companies to provide better options? #cookchat
1:18 am SJOgborn: @cookchat Q2 what about making trade offs? Does anyone go to Trader Joe’s over Whole Foods, etc.? #cookchat
1:18 am shonali: Re: Q2, no, b/c the public doesn’t know/care/needs to deal w other s**t, regardless of Whole Foods. #cookchat
1:18 am aurorameyer: agreed! I workout so I can eat what I like #cookchat @JGoldsborough @msjen01 #cookchat
1:18 am MattLaCasse: RT @stephmajercik: Q2 I think if the health benefits of organic were bigger, I could justify it. It just isn’t worth it #cookchat
1:18 am razethecity: @MattLaCasse I think is some cases the options are pretty good. In #Buffalo, we don’t have Whole Foods but Wegmans does a good job #cookchat
1:19 am aurorameyer: @SJOgborn do you like siracha? or serano peppers? I like them more than jalapeno #cookchat#cookchat
1:20 am MattLaCasse: @razethecity Yeah, I live in Sedalia, MO. Don’t have organic supermarket option, which means it is very difficult #cookchat
1:20 am shonali: @aurorameyer The thing is the perception is that they are more difficult/time-consuming/expensive. #cookchat
1:20 am SJOgborn: @aurorameyer YES! love :) #cookchat
1:20 am aurorameyer: @SJOgborn i would go if we had one here! #cookchat. #cookchat
1:20 am MichaelBittner: re: Q2, how hard is it for you to get organic food? It would seem in some urban areas, organic may not even be an option. #cookchat
1:20 am msjen01: @JGoldsborough True, but changing my diet changed my life more than any exercise regimen I’ve done (including a personal trainer). #cookchat
1:20 am JGoldsborough: @SJOgborn If u can find them, try Montezuma’s Jalapeno chips. Made my eyes water, nose run and tongue burn so bad couldn’t finish. #cookchat
1:20 am SJOgborn: Q3 What are some good recipes for grilling rookies? #cookchat
1:21 am MattLaCasse: @MichaelBittner I think organic food might be easier to come by in urban areas, more of a demand I think. #cookchat
