Why Facebook’s Privacy Policy Is Good For Business
Privacy is one of the most difficult one-size-fits-all subjects being debated today. If you’re out and someone snaps a picture of you with a lei on your head, which may or may not look something like what you see below what I am typing here, and proceeds to post that on Facebook, you may worry about what people will think of you. If you’re like me, you post it on your blog when talking about privacy.
We all value privacy. While I don’t mind posting a ridiculous picture of myself on my blog, others would never do that in a million years. Obviously, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg does not value privacy in his business model. (If you missed the news this week, Wired has an article about it.) When that news broke, my Twitter feed blew up with people condemning, chastising, berating, and finger-shaking Zuckerberg. “How can he NOT value privacy?!” “I’m NEVER going to use Facebook again!” “Have you no decency!” Things of this nature.
I think it is in Facebook’s best interest as a company to continue making information on its site as public as possible. Facebook is not about you. It’s about everyone else on Facebook. Think about it. If you can’t see anyone’s information other than your current friends, how does your network expand? There’s many answers to that question, but the correct one is “very slowly” or even “not at all”.
The sharing of personal information is what has caused Facebook to expand as quickly as it has. If Facebook were to clamp down on what information is considered “public”, it would not only open the door for the next big social media site to make inroads, it would knock down a wall.
More and more, we are living parts of our lives online. Grandparents are able to keep up with far away grandkids because of Facebook. Long lost friends reconnect every day. Even friends that live in the same city are able to keep in closer contact if they don’t see each other every day. These are the relationships that are making Facebook what it is. Zuckerman and his team have been smart enough to take those relationships and turn them into a highly successful enterprise. More power to them I say.
I value my privacy, but I also understand that living your life online, which I do in part, comes with the risk of people knowing lots of info about you. I’ve made peace with that. Don’t be angry with Mark Zuckerberg because he’s smart enough to turn a profit on pictures like the one to the left.
Embarrassing Update: I called Zuckerberg, Zuckerman originally. My apologies.
#HAPPO advice for 2010 Grads/job seekers
I was unemployed from around Valentine’s Day until April 5th. I was fortunate enough to participate in #HAPPO in February. While I didn’t get a job offer as a direct result of #HAPPO, what I DID learn is how to connect with a larger community than the one I was involved with, and where to look for job opportunities I may not have looked previously. Here’s a few words of advice, which are worth what you make of them.
- Landing a gig at an agency is not the be all/end all. PR agencies are fantastic. I know many people in the agency world, and have many friends that work there as well. It is a great career path. But don’t forget that those Fortune 500 companies, or large non-profits, or any other number of entities, usually have PR/Marketing departments. There’s just as much a chance to start your career in a place like that…with far less pressure than will be placed on you in the agency world. Again, and I can’t stress this enough, THERE’S NOTHING WRONG WITH THE AGENCY WORLD OR MODEL!!! I’m just saying there are more opportunities out there than those at agencies. Explore them.
- Have a particular area of interest. I’m not talking about a particular area of practice. Do you like the health care industry? Sports? Agriculture? Or do you have a particular area of the country you absolutely adore? Focus your search in those areas. It narrows down the fire hydrant of job listings you’re looking at and makes it easier to select the jobs you want to go after. I’ve settled in Missouri. Never would have pictured myself here, but it’s home now. The advice there? Take a risk on an area you’ve never been to that you think you might enjoy.
- Large metro areas are fantastic…but so are smaller areas. Maybe it’s because I’m from the Midwest and tire of being called “fly-over country”, but there’s great areas like Kansas City, Columbia, Iowa City, Des Moines, Austin, MSP, and others that aren’t named New York, LA, Miami, etc. Here’s my point. If you have your heart set on being in New York, then by all means, go after a gig in New York. I’d encourage you to explore areas less traveled. These places are just as exciting as other major metropolitan areas. Give them a shot.
- Don’t be disappointed. Don’t expect to get a job offer during #HAPPO. DO expect to make lots of great connections. As I’m sure you’ve heard many times, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know. Treat #HAPPO as the who you know.
I hope you’ve found some of this helpful, or organized your thoughts somewhat. Best of luck to all of you in your search.

| 1:08 am | SJOgborn: | @aurorameyer that’s awesome that you can taste a difference. I keep telling myself “someday…” #cookchat |
| 1:08 am | MattLaCasse: | @emrosario Boooooo! That paper will still be there in an hour! You know what won’t be? #cookchat |
| 1:08 am | aurorameyer: | @JGoldsborough we had lemon pepper chicken, rice and a salad with parsley. it was delish. not sure what grade though #cookchat #cookchat |
| 1:08 am | JGoldsborough: | Q1: Don’t pay much attention as long as it’s cooked and tastes good with BBQ sauce. #cookchat |
| 1:08 am | stephmajercik: | Q1-I honestly don’t pay that much attention to where my food comes from #cookchat |
| 1:08 am | shonali: | Re: Q1, I would love to pay more attention to where my food comes from/how humanely it’s raised/killed. Budgets don’t always allow #cookchat |
| 1:08 am | SJOgborn: | @emrosario no worries, hope we can see you next week. Good luck on homework (I’m off to work like crazy after the chat!) #cookchat |
| 1:09 am | MattLaCasse: | I grew up on a farm in Iowa. I can TOTALLY tell the diff between fresh and not. #cookchat |
| 1:09 am | JGoldsborough: | @stephmajercik @bitty_boop Good 2cu as well. This chat is fun. #cookchat |
| 1:09 am | aurorameyer: | @SJOgborn tomatoes are the garden entry drug of choice. once you taste a fresh one you won’t go back. #cookchat #cookchat |
| 1:09 am | MattLaCasse: | Q1 Do you think cost is the main reason folks don’t care where food comes from? #cookchat |
| 1:09 am | JGoldsborough: | @aurorameyer Oh, that’s like college or maybe even grad school. Way to healthy for us on a Sunday |
| 1:09 am | SJOgborn: | If you do buy some food consciously, what are you always watchful of when you’re at the grocery store? #cookchat |
| 1:09 am | bitty_boop: | Hahah agreed RT @JGoldsborough: Q1: Don’t pay much attention as long as it’s cooked and tastes good with BBQ sauce. #cookchat |
| 1:09 am | shonali: | Re: Q1, not so much “where” it comes from, but I do pay attention to the labels wrt “stuff.” Does that count? #cookchat |
| 1:10 am | JGoldsborough: | @MattLaCasse If they were Ruffles, you’re back to 3rd grade (LOL) #cookchat |
| 1:10 am | MattLaCasse: | @emrosario I’m quite persuasive when convincing people to procrastinate. Just ask my wife. #cookchat |
| 1:10 am | aurorameyer: | @shonali i’d say start small. try a few organic veggies. you’ll taste a difference. #cookchat #cookchat |
| 1:10 am | SJOgborn: | @MattLaCasse Definitely. I know all of my friends would buy healthier if they could afford it. #cookchat |
| 1:10 am | stephmajercik: | RT @bitty_boop: Hahah agreed RT @JGoldsborough: Q1: Dont pay much attention as long as its cooked and tastes good with BBQ sauce. #cookchat |
| 1:10 am | JGoldsborough: | @SJOgborn Hate to say it, but price usually wins over all else. I do watch % lean when buying ground beef. #cookchat |
| 1:10 am | SJOgborn: | @JGoldsborough all I can think of is “r-r-r-ruffles have ridges” #cookchat |
| 1:11 am | shonali: | @aurorameyer Doesn’t how you cook them make a difference as well? #cookchat |
| 1:11 am | aurorameyer: | @JGoldsborough it’s super easy! I’m happy to share the recipe. it only takes 25 minutes too! #cookchat #cookchat |
| 1:11 am | msjen01: | @shonali Pay more $ now for quality produce, eat more fresh foods, and pay less later in medical bills. #cookchat |
| 1:11 am | MattLaCasse: | I think the biggest thing to do is by as locally as you can. Choose farmers market over Dole. #cookchat |
| 1:11 am | MattLaCasse: | @JGoldsborough Nope. Cheetos. 2nd grade. #cookchat |
| 1:11 am | SJOgborn: | @shonali that definitely counts. I am always on the watch for HFCS…sometimes it’s just so uneccessary in food! #cookchat |
| 1:11 am | razethecity: | a little late! Hi, I’m Meghan and I got a set of pots and pans for Christmas, it was the best ever. #cookchat |
| 1:11 am | JGoldsborough: | So true. I like cool ranch Dorritos and Fritos best. u? RT @SJOgborn: all I can think of is “r-r-r-ruffles have ridges” #cookchat |
| 1:12 am | shonali: | @msjen01 Well yes, but there’s a lot more that goes into that! Exercise, etc. #cookchat |
| 1:12 am | aurorameyer: | @shonali very true! ratatouille is a great place to start with fresh veggies in the summer. fresh flavors. #cookchat #cookchat |
| 1:12 am | msjen01: | @shonali You can also do it gradually. Our food budget has increased slowly as we add more fresh veggies/fruits #cookchat |
| 1:12 am | stephmajercik: | Good advice RT @MattLaCasse: I think the biggest thing to do is by as locally as you can. Choose farmers market over Dole. #cookchat |
| 1:12 am | MattLaCasse: | @emrosario We’re discussing slowfood currently! Q2 is coming up in 1 minute #cookchat |
| 1:12 am | razethecity: | Q1 No, I think for a few people it’s more about convenience than anything else! #cookchat |
| 1:12 am | JGoldsborough: | @aurorameyer Ooh, we should start sharing recipes in some way. A #cookchat cookbook. Please do share! |
| 1:12 am | aurorameyer: | @SJOgborn agreed! I can taste it like aspartame in food now. #HFCS #cookchat #cookchat |
| 1:12 am | cockyhawkfan: | Q1 Partially, but I would say fast food and a diluted sense of quality are the biggest factors #cookchat |
| 1:13 am | msjen01: | @shonali Actually from what I’ve read & researched, what we put into our body for fuel is a huge part. Exercise, too of course #cookchat |
| 1:13 am | shonali: | Speaking as a PR person, I think farmers markets etc. need to project a better image so that they become mainstream. #cookchat |
| 1:13 am | razethecity: | RT @aurorameyer Ooh, we should start sharing recipes in some way. A #cookchat cookbook. Please do share! << Love this idea! |
| 1:13 am | MattLaCasse: | Q2 Do you have a preference for organic vs. non-organic food? #cookchat |
| 1:13 am | aurorameyer: | @JGoldsborough lemon pepper, white wine, olive oil. that’s it. #cookchat #cookchat |
| 1:13 am | shonali: | @aurorameyer I LOVE ratatouille. #cookchat |
| 1:14 am | JGoldsborough: | @razethecity For me, price and eating healthy are most important. But healthy to me means vegetables or fruit on every plate. #cookchat |
| 1:14 am | cockyhawkfan: | You really have to be careful when typing #cookchat. A typo could change the conversation in a hurry! #cookchat |
| 1:14 am | stephmajercik: | Q2 I don’t buy organic food. Have read its not THAT much healthier and the price is ridiculous #cookchat |
| 1:14 am | aurorameyer: | @shonali we found the recipe from the movie. AMAZING! #cookchat #cookchat |
| 1:14 am | MattLaCasse: | @shonali Couldn’t agree more. They need to position themselves as a viable alternative to supermarkets. #cookchat |
| 1:14 am | SJOgborn: | @JGoldsborough I like Krunchers…SO random…lol #cookchat |
| 1:14 am | JGoldsborough: | Non. Cheaper. RT @MattLaCasse: Q2 Do you have a preference for organic vs. non-organic food? #cookchat |
| 1:14 am | msjen01: | @shonali but feeding our body properly allows it to take better care of itself (you!) Eat to Live by Fuhrman is a great read. #cookchat |
| 1:14 am | shonali: | LOL! RT @cockyhawkfan: You really have to be careful when typing #cookchat. A typo could change the conversation in a hurry! #cookchat |
| 1:15 am | JGoldsborough: | @shonali Good call on farmer’s markets. We actually have some great ones in KC, but they could use a lot of PR. Hidden gems. #cookchat |
| 1:15 am | chanel4news: | LOL! RT @cockyhawkfan: You really have to be careful when typing #cookchat. A typo could change the conversation in a hurry! #cookchat |
| 1:15 am | razethecity: | Q2 I try to be conscious of buying organic, but sometimes it is cost prohibitive. #cookchat |
| 1:15 am | emrosario: | #cookchat for Q1 cost def matters. Farmer Joel’s is the organic supermarket in ny & not sure if the benefits outweighs cost to me (student) |
| 1:15 am | aurorameyer: | #cookchat Q2 there’s a list let me see if I can find it. It depends on the price really and where it came #cookchat |
| 1:15 am | SJOgborn: | @shonali wow, great point. Honestly something is better than nothing. The ones I know of are super lax about advertising/pr/etc. #cookchat |
| 1:15 am | josephacampbell: | #cockchat RT @cockyhawkfan You really have to be careful when typing #cookchat. A typo could change the conversation in a hurry! #cookchat |
| 1:15 am | JGoldsborough: | U must go to @Panera a lot. They serve those. Jalapeno Krunchers rock! RT @SJOgborn: I like Krunchers…SO random…lol #cookchat |
| 1:15 am | aurorameyer: | for example mexican strawberries give me an allergic reaction. #cookchat. #cookchat |
| 1:15 am | bitty_boop: | Q2 I’m not a big fan of organic food but if it’s there I won’t turn it down. I mean you only live once might as well enjoy it. #cookchat |
| 1:15 am | shonali: | @msjen01 I completely agree. It’s not always easy to get one’s body to listen, though! #cookchat |
| 1:15 am | SJOgborn: | RT @MattLaCasse Q2 Do you have a preference for organic vs. non-organic food? #cookchat#cookchat |
| 1:16 am | SJOgborn: | @razethecity nice to see you here again! |
| 1:16 am | MattLaCasse: | Q2 It seems like the defining issue is cost. Can the public convince Big Food Companies to provide better options? #cookchat |
| 1:16 am | lacajag: | Q1: Part 1: “Ppl who don’t care where food comes” from doesn’t always = “people who don’t buy organically, ethically.” (part 2…) #cookchat |
| 1:16 am | msjen01: | @shonali Takes time for sure! #cookchat |
| 1:17 am | aurorameyer: | #cookchat Q2 farmers markets aren’t much more expensive and neither is gardening yourself. #cookchat |
| 1:17 am | razethecity: | @SJOgborn Hi! Thanks, it’s good to see you too! The familiar faces are so nice! #cookchat |
| 1:17 am | JGoldsborough: | @msjen01 True. But exercise plays a role in how we feel too. I feel like I can take more liberty w/ food cause workout. #cookchat |
| 1:17 am | lacajag: | Q1: Part 2 – When ppl can’t afford organic/ethically produced food doesn’t always mean they don’t care. #cookchat |
| 1:18 am | stephmajercik: | Q2 I think if the health benefits of organic were bigger, I could justify it. It just isn’t worth it. #cookchat |
| 1:18 am | SJOgborn: | @JGoldsborough IMO, jalapeno anything is amazing. love anything spicy that kind of hurts (those chips could be much spicier) #cookchat |
| 1:18 am | JGoldsborough: | @MattLaCasse A good question. Eating healthy shouldn’t be so expensive. But it is, unfortunately. #cookchat |
| 1:18 am | JGoldsborough: | RT @MattLaCasse: Q2 It seems defining issue is cost. Can the public convince Big Food Companies to provide better options? #cookchat |
| 1:18 am | SJOgborn: | @cookchat Q2 what about making trade offs? Does anyone go to Trader Joe’s over Whole Foods, etc.? #cookchat |
| 1:18 am | shonali: | Re: Q2, no, b/c the public doesn’t know/care/needs to deal w other s**t, regardless of Whole Foods. #cookchat |
| 1:18 am | aurorameyer: | agreed! I workout so I can eat what I like #cookchat @JGoldsborough @msjen01 #cookchat |
| 1:18 am | MattLaCasse: | RT @stephmajercik: Q2 I think if the health benefits of organic were bigger, I could justify it. It just isn’t worth it #cookchat |
| 1:18 am | razethecity: | @MattLaCasse I think is some cases the options are pretty good. In #Buffalo, we don’t have Whole Foods but Wegmans does a good job #cookchat |
| 1:19 am | aurorameyer: | @SJOgborn do you like siracha? or serano peppers? I like them more than jalapeno #cookchat#cookchat |
| 1:20 am | MattLaCasse: | @razethecity Yeah, I live in Sedalia, MO. Don’t have organic supermarket option, which means it is very difficult #cookchat |
| 1:20 am | shonali: | @aurorameyer The thing is the perception is that they are more difficult/time-consuming/expensive. #cookchat |
| 1:20 am | SJOgborn: | @aurorameyer YES! love |
| 1:20 am | aurorameyer: | @SJOgborn i would go if we had one here! #cookchat. #cookchat |
| 1:20 am | MichaelBittner: | re: Q2, how hard is it for you to get organic food? It would seem in some urban areas, organic may not even be an option. #cookchat |
| 1:20 am | msjen01: | @JGoldsborough True, but changing my diet changed my life more than any exercise regimen I’ve done (including a personal trainer). #cookchat |
| 1:20 am | JGoldsborough: | @SJOgborn If u can find them, try Montezuma’s Jalapeno chips. Made my eyes water, nose run and tongue burn so bad couldn’t finish. #cookchat |
| 1:20 am | SJOgborn: | Q3 What are some good recipes for grilling rookies? #cookchat |
| 1:21 am | MattLaCasse: | @MichaelBittner I think organic food might be easier to come by in urban areas, more of a demand I think. #cookchat |

| 1:26 am | SJOgborn: | @bitty_boop that sounds delish! I’m bad at grilling (AKA never do it) so these are great tips. #cookchat |

| 1:26 am | bitty_boop: | @MattLaCasse My mom told me to use it when I started grilling last year. Roommate really loved it #cookchat |
| 1:26 am | MattLaCasse: | @bitty_boop Yep. I just learned that trick last summer. Utilize it as often as possible. #cookchat |

Honesty Is The Best Policy
I participated for the first time this week in #pr20chat, and boy did I pick a great week to start. The topic this week was ethics. Heather Whaling, who co-mods with Justin Goldsborough, ran the show this week, and asked some really tough questions. You can click on her name above, which will take you to her blog where she’s listed the questions she asked on Tuesday night. I could do a blog post on every single one of those questions, and each one would be a monster, Bill Simmons-and-his-buddies-in-Vegas length post. Thousands of words. So, instead, I’ll focus on something I said. Hey! Don’t look at me like that! This is MY blog after all!

During the chat, I said we as public relations professionals need to hold ourselves to a higher standard of ethics, transparency and honesty than the journalists we deal with on a daily basis. Let me expand on that.
Forgetting for a moment that the public, in general, distrusts everything about the media, it is much more likely to take a reporter’s word for something rather than a PR or marketing person. The perception of our industry is one of placing our interests ahead of those of our audiences. Because of that, we are not afforded the same luxury of being taken at our word.
We MUST be as upfront, honest and transparent as we possibly can. Generally speaking, a journalist is trusted when they write something, or report something on the air. Generally speaking, we are not. Truth be told, your reputation is the only currency that matters as a pr professional. If you are caught in a lie, covering up embarrassing details, or anything else that may harm your credibility, you’ll never gain the same level of trust with journalists, and by extension, the public, you enjoyed before.
When you were a child, what were your parents most upset about when you busted a window throwing a baseball against the side of the house when they’d told you NOT to do so many times? The fact that you broke the window? Or that you lied about doing it? If your parents are anything like mine, it’s the latter option. That’s the way the public is too. They won’t be happy that you broke the window, but they’ll respect you for being honest about it, and be more willing to trust you in the future.
All lying does is postpone the inevitable. If the embarrassing info about your client, or employer, is interesting to enough people, it will come out at some point. You might be able to control WHEN that info comes out, but make no mistake, you have no control whether or not it WILL come out. Be honest about it. You’ll be surprised how people react towards you in the future.

| 1:07 am | MattLaCasse: | Q1 I think it’s awfully brilliant. It’s like Hardee’s saying we don’t care if it’s unhealthy. Customers want it we’ll provide it #cookchat |

| 1:09 am | SuperDu: | The Double Down doesn’t have bun, but it still has breading. A bun would be redundant. #cookchat |
| 1:09 am | JasMollica: | @MattLaCasse @stephmajercik No… If I’m going to experiment, I’m trying two grilled chicken fillets with crumbly bleu in between #cookchat |

| 1:43 am | MattLaCasse: | @stephmajercik Yep. Changing how you eat is incredibly difficult. #cookchat |
| 1:44 am | SuperDu: | Well, Emeril or Paula Dean really can’t carry the message Jamies’s bringing to schools. Maybe Bobby Flay? Who does healthy? #cookchat |
| 1:44 am | SJOgborn: | @StephanieHermes very true. Reminds me of that book “why French women don’t get fat”! #cookchat |
| 1:44 am | LaurenJohnson: | Q5 It makes me think differently because I’m a college student and sometimes feel like I have limited healthy choices #cookchat |
| 1:45 am | MattLaCasse: | @SJOgborn Some people will view him as “holier than thou”, rejecting msg out-of-hand simply because they don’t like it. #cookchat |
| 1:45 am | LaurenJohnson: | Q5 It also makes me wish I had someone fighting for better meals while I was in elementary school! #cookchat |
| 1:45 am | MattLaCasse: | @LaurenJohnson Are you trying to say that college cafeterias don’t have student’s best health interests in mind? |
| 1:47 am | MattLaCasse: | @SuperDu No healthy cooking names spring to mind immediately, save for @jamie_oliver. That says a lot IMO #cookchat |

| 1:50 am | MattLaCasse: | @StephanieHermes Definitely. Ppl buy into movements because of ppl they know usually. Not movement leader. #cookchat |

| 1:53 am | MattLaCasse: | @LaurenJohnson Agreed. I think you just submitted a question for next week! #cookchat |
| 1:54 am | SJOgborn: | Q6 what meals are you looking forward to in the next week? #cookchat |

| 1:55 am | MattLaCasse: | Q6 Pasta roll ups. They’re kind of like manicotti, but not as difficult to make. #cookchat |
| 1:56 am | MattLaCasse: | @cockyhawkfan Why do you say that? Are Americans too stubborn…or too lazy? #cookchat |

#Cookchat Transcript
First of all, THANK YOU! What a great turnout for the world premiere of #cookchat on Sunday night. We had 43 contributors with nearly 500 tweets. Sam and I talked afterwards and agreed that this far exceeded any expectations we had. As I’ve said in the past, the future of #cookchat completely depends on YOU! We want to talk about topics you want to discuss, so email questions/comments/hate mail to cookchat [at] gmail [dot] com or DM either Sam (@SJOGborn) or myself (@MattLaCasse) and we’ll make sure your questions are asked!
Here’s the transcript of the world premiere of #cookchat, and be sure to join us at 8 PM CENTRAL this Sunday for the sophomore edition! Please ignore the time stamp on the left-hand side, I’m sure there’s a way to develop a transcript without it showing up in Pacific time, but I didn’t have the time to figure it out (also, I’m not sure which “Pacific” time whashtag.com is referencing…Hawaii time perhaps?).

Tiger and Tiki: When The Best PR Doesn’t Help
As the world waits to see how Tiger will respond on this final day of the Masters, controversy still surrounds him due to his, as ESPN has said, “off the course troubles”. Another major sports star, turned TV star, was exposed for cheating on his wife, and dumping her for a 23-year old woman. Did I mention Barber’s wife is 8 months pregnant? With twins? Yeah. I had an interesting discussion a few guys earlier this week, Jason Mollica (@JasMollica) Colin Pennington (@ColinJP), and Mike Schaffer (@mikeschaffer), regarding which was the more difficult situation to do PR for. I thought it was Tiki, due to the pregnant wife angle, though I was in the minority. The number of infidelities seemed to win out. In any case, that’s not what this post is about.
There’s no doubt that a PR effort needed to happen on behalf of both men. The question is, does it really help? In Tiger’s case, you could make the argument that all the PR efforts he and his camp did absolutely nothing for his image/reputation in comparison to what getting back on the course has done. The story about Tiger since he teed off on Thursday has not been his infidelity; it’s been his redemption (whether or not playing golf well qualifies as redemption is another story). It seems the media, and people in general, are beginning to forget about the past 5 months and are focusing instead on Tiger’s athletic accomplishments. I was talking about this with my wife, who is a kindergarten teacher, specifically about the ad Nike released on Wednesday night. If you haven’t seen it, here it is:
She asked a very interesting question I hadn’t thought about. Many have called the ad creepy, weird, disrespectful, and may other things. My wife asked, “Why would he think it’s OK to use his dad in a commercial like that?”. What a great question. If Tiger really cares about his father, why would he sell out his memory to save his image? It would be one thing if he referenced his father during an interview, saying he was drawing on that memory to help find his way through this mess. It is completely another if Earl Woods’ voice is used in an ad to sell golf bags. Make no mistake, that’s REALLY what Nike wants out of that ad. Nike has millions of dollars invested in Tiger as a brand. If it can’t save Tiger’s image, those millions of dollars are wasted. A large majority of people didn’t think the ad worked, a few thought it was brilliant.
Tiki Barber is a little different situation. He’s no longer an active athlete, but has transitioned into TV, working mostly for NBC on the Today show and Sunday Night Football. He’s never been as big a star as Tiger either, but he can’t hole up in his mansion and not come out in public for 4 months. The best PR move might be to admit to what he’s done (which he has), and move on. He’s a minor enough celebrity at this point that the public will forget about all of this, including the Today show audience, within a few weeks.
The bottom line, at least in my mind, is this. There are some situations where the best PR just doesn’t make a big difference. With both Tiger and Tiki, most people will either care and crucify them, or not care and move on. Infidelity is a very personal subject, and a difficult one to control the message about. There’s no way to paint the situation as “not that bad” or “my client had every right to do what he/she did”. Sometimes, time is the best PR. A person might have a long memory…but people, as a group, do not.

I start back to work tomorrow, Monday, April 5th. To say I’m excited would be a slight understatement. I know what it is like to be without a job, and as it happens, I know of an open job in Columbia, Missouri. This is a sales job, but the opportunity sounds like a good one. I’ll let Sean Spence explain:
A new Mid-Missouri Web site (www.VoicesDaily.com) is seeking one ad sales representative. 50% commission rate (pay is based solely on commission). Representative will be provided with leads and will be asked to generate new ones. Representative will work with management team to design the sales program, which could include e-mail, telephone, and/or in-person sales. The right sales person should be able to earn at least $1000/week. For more information or to apply, contact Sean Spence at seanspence@earthlink.net.
A high-risk/high-reward type of situation, but I know Sean, and I’d recommend this opportunity for someone right out of school, or looking for a new opportunity. I can also help you get in touch with Sean if you are interested. Just send me an email at lacamat [at] gmail [dot] com.
#Cookchat and You
I was planning on posting this over the weekend, but it dawned on me that it’s a holiday weekend and people may have better things to do than to just sit at their computer all weekend. So, forgive me if this seems a bit rushed…I’m trying to get this done before people leave early this afternoon.
NEXT Sunday, April 11th, will mark the inaugural edition of #cookchat. I’ve talked about what Sam and I have envisioned for #cookchat before, so go check that out. The key factor in all of this is YOU. Sam and I love food (me more so than her. I’ve got the waistline to prove it). However, you guys love food too and probably have passions in different areas than we do. Just like any other chat on “The Series Of Tubes”, otherwise known as the Internet, if the content of #cookchat is left to us, it’ll get really boring really fast. Participation is key. For example, if Sam and I were to argue over what the best cake in the history of the world is, she would probably argue for something like this:
Because she's a girl. See what I did there?
I would counter with the groom’s cake from my wedding:
And I would, obviously, win. Because mine is better. Anyway, you see why we are rather intent on you participating in #cookchat. We’ve developed a few questions for the initial chat, which we’re hoping will be enough to fill a whole hour. In the end though, #cookchat is ALL ABOUT YOU! Cooking and food are far less controversial than issues in public relations, journalism, politics, etc. but that doesn’t mean people aren’t as passionate about food. Without your participation, #cookchat will end up like leftover cashew chicken; cold, bland and really boring. Instead, I propose you help us make #cookchat into this:

I have no idea. I googled "exciting food" and that's the first image that popped up.
Mark it on your calendars. Sunday, April 11th, 2010, 8 pm CENTRAL!
